freddie mercury
Getting stuck in the past musically seems to be a real risk for most people as they get older, and I'm no exception. I think 90% of what I hear on the radio is utter rubbish and of a quality far below that of the 60s-80s. But that said, I can think of a lot of rubbish coming out of all three of those decades as well.
Queen may not be the most trendy or current music around, but every time I hear Freddie Mercury sing, I think that he is an example of the best of modern pop / rock. He was the ultimate showman, and a singer of the absolute highest calibre. Queen also had a few lousy songs, as all bands do, but 90% of their material (and particularly Freddie's songs) was first class, and very few can follow in his vocal footsteps.
I can't help but imagine what sort of music he would be making if he were alive today. I'd imagine he would have moved on from the type of glam rock Queen were so good at. Maybe he'd be doing Michael Bublé type ballads... Now that would be something.
